What are Veneers and how can they benefit me?

Porcelain veneers are quite thin pieces of porcelain used to give you back the natural clean look of your teeth. At the same time porcelain veneers provide strength and resilience which can be compared to that of natural tooth enamel. Veneers is increasingly becoming the choice for patients wanting to make small positional alterations, or to change the shape of the tooth the size or even the color.

Malo Smile USA offers a Veneer Consultation

A consultation is the starting point in finding out, if veneers are the correct option for you, or if there are solutions available which are better suited for your specific needs. Letting us know what it is you want to achieve is essential for a successful result. The time spend in identifying what kind of cosmetic improvements you seek is very important, and we take it very seriously when we listen to you.

Using the option of veneers to accomplish cosmetic goals is not a “one size fits all solution”. Each and every mouth is different and presents different challenges. The decision whether or not veneers are really the best option for you needs to be meticulously researched.

We usually start with a so called “smile analysis” to find out what steps we need to take to give you the smile you envisage. Our diagnostic mockup allows you to “try on” veneers so you can see if the end result matches up with your expectations.

Porcelain Veneers – The How and the Why

What are they made of? They consist of several extremely thin layers of ceramic. Their purpose is to replace some of the original tooth enamel, and add an adhesive layer. To place a veneer onto a tooth, a tiny amount of the existing tooth enamel has to be removed, normally less than one millimeter. This is important as it makes space for the porcelain veneer to fit well and comfortable within the mouth and most proficiently restore the natural tooth function while simultaneously achieving a more appealing look of the tooth/teeth.

The bond between the porcelain veneer original tooth/teeth is important. It provides the desired esthetic perfection and offers a strong bond so critical for correct veneer function. A light-sensitive resin is added directly between the original tooth and the veneer. This resin then undergoes a hardening process using a special curing light.

Porcelain veneers can be highly effective and suitable options in great many situations. For example:

  1. A tooth has developed an unsightly color, shape, or contours.
  2. It is very often a very good choice to deal with fractured teeth or spaces between teeth. Veneers can also be used to correct when there are non-major bite-related problems.
  3. Sometimes topical stains do not react well to teeth whitening or bleaching. In those situations, a porcelain veneer could be a great option.

There is something called “no-prep” or “minimal prep” veneers

What does it mean? There are patients which are seeking a different way to the more traditional dental veneers solution or bonding, but please be very careful, because this option is not suitable for everyone.

They are called “no-prep” or “minimal prep” veneers because we do not have to remove quite as much tooth material. This type of veneer is directly placed to the front surface of the teeth. This means, that the application of those no-prep veneers can be done a lot faster and with a little less inconvenience than those “commonly used” veneers.

We will carefully examine whether or not you a good candidate for the so called “minimal prep” or “no-prep” veneers, and then recommend the best option for you.

What are the real benefits of veneers?

Because veneers are bespoke made for each person, it is very difficult, even impossible to see the difference between a veneer and a “normal” tooth. Unlike natural teeth, the custom-made veneers are very resistant towards coffee as well as tea stains, and even cigarette smoke because the veneers are made of high tech material.

When opting for veneers (if that is truly the best solution, and we will tell you if it is) the natural teeth remain largely as they are, since there will be only minor alterations made to the tooth/teeth so a veneer can be fitted. A further benefit is of course, that by using veneers the teeth which cannot be made look white using standard teeth whitening products/treatments can be made bright and can get their sparkle back.
